War, displacement, climate crisis, pandemic, artificial intelligence and international armament – the major geopolitical upheavals of our time are creating fear, uncertainty and loneliness. In an increasingly confusing world, there is a growing desire for a ‘strong hand’ at the borders and a tightly knit ‘us’ within. Judith Kohlenberger's astute analysis traces the beginning and, in some cases, already completed authoritarian shift that has also taken hold in the middle classes, using the rampant panic surrounding migration as an example.
